As we all know, there are many different plating method in this industry. Classified according to the processes of electroplating, there are Galvanic plating (Water plating) and IP plating; Classified according to the methods of electroplating, there are Barrel plating (rolling plating), rack plating (hanging plating) and brushed plating etc.

What's the difference?

• Galvanic plating: it belongs to wet plating, which achieves metal deposition by immersing in a water-based plating solution containing metal ions, it colors the surface of the metal frame through electrolysis. For example, Gold plating refers to placing the metal frames in an electroplated gold tank (which contains a pre-prepared electroplating liquid and real gold that can be chemically processed), then start the machine and attach a thin layer of gold to the surface of the metal frames. The advantage of galvanic plating is cost effective, various color choice and good adhesion. It's mainly applied among stainless steel frames, cupronickel and other regular metal material frames. 

• IP plating: it belongs to dry plating, usually carried out under vacuum conditions. It heat high temperature and causes the formation of negative ions on the surface of the metal frames, which dissociate in the vacuum furnace and combine with pigment particles, guiding adsorption in the positive and negative directions through current flow. The advantage of IP plating is best adhesion but with less color choices. It's mainly applied among Titanium frames. 

• Rack plating: It is to place the eyewear components to be plated one by one on the holder and electroplate them one by one. The advantage is each components can be well plated but cost a little bit higher than barrel plating. Normally it is applied on components in big or medium size, for example, metal trim, metal frames, metal temples, etc.

• Barrel plating: It is to put multiple small pieces together into a rolling groove for electroplating. The advantage is cost effective, but it is easy to make components surface get scratched. Normally it is applied on components in small size, for example, pins, screws or hinges, etc. 

• Brushed plating: It is the electroplating treatment of a specific area, usually used for repair or local treatment. For example, when the hinge plating surface peel off during polishing, we can use brushed plating for repairing.
