  • Precision rim shaping is the foundation of welding

With the upgrading of eyewear craftsmanship, traditional hand-molded eyeglass rim have been replaced by CNC rim bending machine automatic forming technology. Today computer programming control system can well control the frame production, which can provide a accuracy tolerance within 0.01mm. Whether it is round, square, irregular or other rim shapes, the machine can produce it accurately.

The shape and size of the rim not only define the core appearance of the eyeglasses but also directly determine the fit with different face shapes and the weight balance when wearing. This high-precision shaping is essential for precision welding process - only when the component dimensions are precise can the welding points be aligned, this is helpful to avoid some problems, for example unstable welding and uneven appearance caused by big gaps.

  •  Characteristics of frame material: determine different welding process

Eyeglass frames mostly adopt special alloy materials (such as titanium alloy, stainless steel, memory alloy, etc.). These materials have excellent physical and chemical properties such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and light weight, which can not only ensure the durability of the frame but also reduce the wearing pressure. Different material use different welding process, and the process parameters is different for ensuring welding quality.   • Core welding process: high frequency welding + argon protection, balancing durability and aesthetics.

The connection between the eyeglass frame, nose bridge and wire mainly use high-frequency welding process, assisted by customized positioning mould. High-frequency welding, has advantages of rapid heating and concentrated welding points, can complete joint welding in a very short time, reduce the high-temperature residence time of materials, and avoid frame deformation; the positioning mould can accurately fix the position of each component, ensuring that the frame is symmetrical and the nose bridge is centered after welding, meeting the balance requirement when wearing.

 

To solve the problem of easy oxidation of alloy materials during welding, high-end eyeglass frame welding will additionally adopt argon protection technology - during welding, argon will generate a protective cover at the welding part, isolating the contact between air and high-temperature metal, preventing welding part become black. It not only ensures the stability of the welding joint  but also makes the welding marks more delicate, improving the overall aesthetics of the frame.

 

 

  • Process meaning of welding

The completion of frame welding means that the main structure of the eyeglass frame is officially finished. Welding quality directly determines the service life of the eyeglass frame: if the welding is not durable, problems such as frame loosening and fracture may occur during wearing; if the welding joint appearance is rough, it will not only affect the appearance but also may cause wearing discomfort due to the convex surface rubbing the skin.   • Are eyeglass frames welded with argon protection more durable than common welding?

Yes. Argon protection can effectively avoid oxidation of the welding joint, prevent joint falling off. Compared with ordinary welding, the joint welded with argon protection can increase the strength while pull the frame even bend it, also the service life can be increased by more than 30%. At the same time, the appearance is more delicate without oxidation and blackening. 

 

  • Is a slight welding mark at the frame welding joint a quality problem?

It needs to be judged according to the situation: if the welding mark is convex, rough, or has an obvious scratch when touched by hand, it is a quality problem; if it is a slight flat welding mark, it is normal - high-quality welding will reserve polishing tolerance, and after polishing, the welding mark can be controlled within 0.1 mm, which does not affect the appearance and wearing.

 

  • Is the welding difficulty of titanium eyeglass frames higher than that of stainless steel?

Yes sure. The melting point of titanium alloy (1668℃) is much higher than that of stainless steel (1450℃), and it is easy to oxidize. During welding, we must well control the high-temperature duration and full argon protection. At the same time, the requirements for welding material purity are very high (requiring more than 99.9% pure titanium welding materials), and the process complex and cost are higher than stainless steel welding.

 

  • Is the welding joint easy to break during daily wearing?

High-quality welded eyeglass frames are not easy to break under normal wearing. If you feel the welding joint is easy to break, they are mostly caused by welding quality problems (such as loose joint, pores) or unreasonable wearing experience. We recommend to choose eyeglasses with high-frequency argon welding and tensile strength testing (≥50N), and avoid pulling the frame rudely

 

  • Will the size of the frame change after welding?

Before welding high-quality eyeglass frames, they will be precisely shaped by CNC frame bending machines (error ≤ 0.01 mm), fixed with positioning mould during welding, and adjusted after welding to ensure that the dimensional tolerance is controlled within 0.02 mm, which does not affect the wearing fit.

 

  • Will the memory alloy eyeglass frame lose its memory function after welding?

No, if we take unique and appropriate welding process for memory alloy material, Memory alloy welding needs to control the temperature at 1200-1300℃ and shorten the high-temperature residence time (0.5-0.8 seconds) to avoid damaging the internal memory structure of the alloy. In this way, the welded memory alloy frame can still maintain the original rebound and deformation recovery performance.
