Eyeglass Frame Electroplating Technology | Eyewear Craft Series (3)

Electroplating is a key metal surface treatment technology. It uses electrolysis to coat a uniform, dense metal or alloy layer on the metal substrate surface. This process is not unique to the eyewear industry, but it is very important for eyeglass manufacturing. It effectively keeps the base metal away from air, sweat and other external factors, prevents oxidation and rust, and extends the frame's service life. Meanwhile, choosing different coating materials can color frames gold, silver, gunmetal, rose gold and more, making products look better and feel nicer.

1. Core Value, Application Scope and Brand Relevance

In the eyewear industry, electroplating is mainly used for metal eyeglass frames. Different frame materials have clear requirements for electroplating processes:

Titanium and titanium alloy frames: Titanium itself resists corrosion well. But to make its surface look nicer and harder, titanium frames usually use IP plating. IP plating is a type of vacuum plating. Its coating sticks tightly to the titanium base, won't peel or scratch easily, and creates soft colors. It is the standard surface treatment for high-end titanium frames.

Copper alloy/zinc alloy frames: These materials are cheap and are the main base materials for mid-to-low-end metal frames. They don't resist corrosion well, so they need better protective electroplating. We usually use wet plating. It coats nickel, chromium, gold or other metals on the surface to block corrosion and make frames shine.

Stainless steel frames: Stainless steel resists corrosion well on its own. Electroplating is mostly for decoration. You can choose wet plating or vacuum plating as needed to get different surface effects.

Aluminum alloy frames: Aluminum alloy is light, but its surface easily oxidizes and forms an oxide film. Before electroplating, a special pre-treatment is needed to remove this film. Both wet plating and vacuum plating are commonly used.

Deepward's metal frames are mainly titanium frames, with a large number of stainless steel frames. Over years of experience accumulation, our production and process technology have become very mature.

2. Two Core Types of Eyeglass Frame Electroplating: Wet Plating and Vacuum Plating

Electroplating processes for eyeglasses mainly fall into two categories: wet plating and vacuum plating. They differ greatly in principle, cost and process requirements. The specific comparison is as follows:

Wet Plating

Process Principle: Use water as the medium. Put the frame to be plated as the cathode and the coating metal as the anode into an electrolyte containing the coating metal ions. Apply an electric current, and the metal ions in the electrolyte deposit on the frame surface under the electric field to form a uniform coating.

Process Features: Low equipment and initial investment, mature technology, suitable for large-scale mass production. It can plate many types of metals and achieve relatively thick coatings. However, wet plating produces some wastewater pollution, needs strict environmental treatment, and doesn't stick well to some special materials (such as pure titanium).

Industry Application: It is currently the most widely used electroplating process in the eyewear industry. Most mid-to-low-end metal frames and some mid-range products use wet plating.

Vacuum Plating(IP Plating)

Process Principle: In a vacuum environment, turn the coating metal into gaseous atoms or ions through evaporation, sputtering, ion plating and other methods. These particles deposit on the frame surface to form a coating. Among them, IP plating is a high-tech vacuum plating method. It uses ion bombardment to make the coating stick closer to the base.

Process Features: High initial equipment investment, strict requirements for base material cleanliness and flatness, and careful process control. The coating is uniform, dense, sticks well, resists wear and corrosion effectively, and is eco-friendly with no wastewater discharge.

Industry Application: Mainly used for surface treatment of high-end eyeglass frames, such as high-end titanium frames and high-end stainless steel frames. It can keep the frame's quality and durability to the maximum extent.

It is worth noting that after wet plating and vacuum plating, the frame appearance is almost the same to the naked eye. But wet-plated frames are slightly brighter in color. Both give frames the same core physical and chemical properties-anti-corrosion, wear resistance and decoration. The key differences are process cost, environmental friendliness, and the bonding strength between the coating and the base (color retention time).

3.FAQ

Q: Why can titanium frames usually only use IP plating instead of wet plating?

A: Titanium has stable chemical properties and easily forms a dense oxide film on its surface. This film stops metal ions in the wet plating electrolyte from depositing, leading to poor coating adhesion and easy peeling. IP plating is a vacuum ion plating process. In a vacuum, ion bombardment can effectively remove the oxide film on titanium surface, and make coating ions bond with titanium base through physical and chemical reactions. The coating is much firmer than wet plating, so it becomes the special electroplating process for titanium frames.

Q: Will electroplated eyeglass frames fade?

A: The fading of electroplated frames mainly depends on the electroplating process, coating thickness and daily use habits. High-quality vacuum-plated or thick wet-plated frames can keep their color for years without obvious fading if worn normally, and protected from scratches and chemical corrosion (such as sweat, cosmetics, seawater, etc.). If the coating is thin, or the frame is in long-term contact with corrosive substances or frequently rubbed, the coating may fade, wear off and expose the base.

Q: How can consumers distinguish between wet-plated and vacuum-plated eyeglass frames?

A: It's hard to tell them apart directly from appearance. It's recommended to check the product material and price. Vacuum plating is mainly used for high-end frames like titanium alloy, which are usually more expensive. Wet plating is mostly used for mid-to-low-end frames like copper alloy and zinc alloy, with lower prices. In addition, vacuum-plated frames feel smoother, resist wear better, and are less likely to have scratches or coating peeling after long-term wear.
